The motif depicts the ancient Chinese legend of the Three Laughers of Tiger Ravine, in which three friends Huiyuan, Tao Yuanming and Lu Xiujing burst into laughter after crossing the bridge over Tiger Ravine. Tokoyama Gyokko, from Hara Village in Sakata District, was a painter of ceramics, who was not employed by the han but decorated blanks purchased from the hanyo (domain-run kilns).
