Noh Mask: Shishiguchi |
Painted Japanese cypress Muromachi period, 16th century Gift of Ii Family |
This mask represents a shishi, an imaginary beast and mount of Manjusri. The mask is used in Shakkyo, a noh play featuring a scene in which a shishi frolics with peony flowers. The dynamism of the sculpting conveys the energy and magnificence of the animal. This mask is one of the superior examples among the noh masks in the Ii family collection.
