In 1853, Matthew C. Perry, in command of the United States East India Squadron, arrived at Edo Bay demanding that Tokugawa shogunate open up for trade. He landed at Kurihama, Uraga (today’s Yokosuka City in Kanagawa), where he presented an official letter from the American President. Hikone fief took part in guarding the coast on this occasion.
