Tsubo-yanagui Quiver with Family Crests and Flying Dragons
Height of quiver 38.0 cm, length of arrows 89.0 cm; Edo period, 18th century; Gift of the Ii Family

The tsubo-yanagui is a cylindrical type of quiver. This one has a gold maki-e design of tachibana citrus and igeta well-frame patterns, both used as Ii family crests, as well as three dragons flying in clouds on a black lacquer ground. The arrows in the accompanying set each carry an inscription in sumi ink that reads “Hikone chūjō [the rank ‘middle captain’],” indicating that the quiver and arrows belonged to the daimyo of Hikone domain.
