Suit of Armor in Gusoku Style

Suit of Armor in Gusoku Style
Cultural Asesets designated by the Hikone City government
Shiga Prefecture
Red-lacquered iron plates with red silk lacing
With cuirass in nuinobe-nimaido style
Edo period, 19th century
Owned by Ii Naosuke (1815-1860), 13th lord of the Hikone domain
Gift of Ii Family

The large size of the menpo-o (face shield) and do is indicative of the large physique of Naosuke, thirteenth head of Ii family, who owned these pieces. The suit closely resembles those owned by Naotaka, second head of Ii family, in the style of the helmet and color of silk lacing employed to join the various components.
