Awase-kariginu Outer Jacket

Awase-kariginu Outer Jacket
Take (length) 163.0 cm, yuki-take (from neck center to sleeve end) 98.0 cm; Edo period, 19th century; Gift of the Ii Family

The kariginu is an outer jacket worn by male characters. This example, notable for its bold combination of colors with repeated Bishamon kikk motifs in gold and navy, is designed to show that the wearer is playing an ogre or other formidable character. The powerful images of shishi with heads facing back add to the dynamism of the design. This garment was passed down by the Maeda daimyo family of Kaga domain.
