Landscapes of Sumiyoshi Shrine, Suma and Akashi

Landscapes of Sumiyoshi Shrine, Suma and Akashi
By Kano Sansetsu (1590-1651)
Pair of six-panel folding screens, color on paper
Edo period, 17th century
Gift of Ii Family

The right-hand screen represents distant views of Suma and Akashi (both in Hyogo), with figures engaged in sea-salt production. The left screen depicts Sumiyoshi Grand Shrine (in Osaka) in the near distance. Both were popular meisho-e subjects but the combination of the two is rare.
