The Wakan rōei-shū is an anthology of Chinese and Japanese poems popularly recited by Heian-period (794–1185) court nobles. It was compiled around 1013 by Fujiwara no Kintō, a poet, critic, and high-ranking member of the court. In the seventeenth century thirty members of the court nobility contributed to this hand-copied edition, led by Minister of the Left Konoe Motohiro (1648–1722), who was known for the gentle Japanese style of his brushwork.
