Ode to All Sorts of Flowers

Ode to All Sorts of Flowers
By Morikawa Kyoriku (1656-1715)
Handscroll, ink and color on paper
Edo period, dated Hoei l (1704)
Gift of Ii Family

Humorous text likening over 30 species of flowers to women, is accompanied by light-hearted and witty illustrations. This scroll was created by Morikawa Kyoriku (1656 – 1715), a Ii clan who was a pupil of renowned poet Matsuo Basho, and an accomplished artist. The work, which exquisitely combines pictures and poetry, is one of best examples of Kyoriku’s work.
