Go, shogi, and sugoroku game boards, collectively called the sanmen (“three boards”), formed a standard set as part of the trousseau of a daimyo woman. When Yoshiko, daughter of Prince Arisugawa Takahito, married fourteenth daimyo Ii Naonori, she brought a set of boards with her, including this go board. Triple-chrysanthemum (mitsu-yoko-giku) crests of the Arisugawa-no-miya family are scattered among scrolling patterns festooned with sasa bamboo leaves on a black lacquer ground.
