Height 106.5 cm, width 112.2 cm, depth 82.3 cm; Edo period, 19th century; Gift of the Ii Family |
This palanquin was part of the trousseau of Yachiyo (1846–1927), daughter of thirteenth daimyo Ii Naosuke, prepared on the occasion of her marriage in 1858 to Matsudaira Yoritoshi, heir to Takamatsu domain. Made in Kyoto according to arrangements by Nagano Yoshitoki, a trusted vassal of Naosuke, the palanquin is decorated with gold maki-e designs of auspicious pine, bamboo, and plum, as well as the Ii family crest of tachibana citrus and the Matsudaira family’s wild-ginger crest, on a black lacquer ground. The interior, too, is gorgeously decorated with flowers and birds of the four seasons in color on a gold ground.
