Miniature Trousseau Set

Miniature Trousseau Set
Edo period, 19th century; Gift of the Ii Family

This set is a miniature version (hina-dōgu) based on the trousseau prepared for Ii Yachiyo. Among daimyo families it was customary to make hinadōgu miniatures of their daughter’s bridal set. In this one, each item is decorated with maki-e designs of pine, bamboo, and plum on a black lacquer ground along with the Ii family’s tachibana citrus crest, just as the actual set was. A total of 85 items have been passed down, including a miniature version of the shell-game box that was the crowning piece of a trousseau.
