Lobed Tray

Lobed Tray
with design of landscape with pavilions and figures in carved cinnabar lacquer
Chinese, Ming dynasty, 16th century
Gift of Ii Family

The design represents structures, figures and flowering plants such as peonies, citruses and gardenias in an idealized landscape. It is carved on a surface coated with multiple layers of cinnabar lacquer, in a Chinese carved lacquer technique known in Japan as tsuishu.
