Tachibina Doll Couple

Tachibina Doll Couple
Height: man 30.6 cm, woman 24.7 cm; Edo period, 19th century; Gift of the Ii Family

Tachibina (“standing dolls”) are a type of hina doll, displayed as a couple leaning against a hinadan step altar, a byōbu screen, or the like. This example is part of the trousseau of Ii Naosuke’s daughter Yachiyo. Made of paper, the costumes are in a style from around the Muromachi period, with the male doll wearing a kosode, a type of attire that was the origin of the kimono. The faces, with their charmingly innocent expressions, are in the mid-Edo period Jirōzaemon-bina style.
