This finely proportioned bottle is an example of Satsuma cut glass (kiriko) made in Satsuma Province (present-day Kagoshima Prefecture) during the late Edo period under the influence of glassmaking in Europe (particularly England, Ireland, and Bohemia) and Qing China. Satsuma kiriko is known for such features as gradation, vivid coloring, and delicate cut lines. Purple glass is featured in the crown of the stopper, bands at the shoulder and the base, and sections on the body with two types of cleanly incised patterns.
