Naomasa, first head of Ii family, was born in 1561 to a local feudal lord in Toutoumi Province (today’s Shizuoka). After becoming a vassal of Tokugawa Ieyasu at the age of 15, Naomasa served actively in battle, and contributed significantly to the establishment of the shogunate by Ieyasu. Naomasa established the foundations of the prosperity enjoyed by subsequent generations of Hikone domain’s Ii clan.
