In 1695, fourth daimyo Ii Naooki (1656–1717) undertook to construct a temple to the goddess Benzaiten at the foot of Sawayama, a mountain northeast of Hikone Castle. In addition to the funds provided by the Ii family, one mon (equivalent to about 25 yen today) per person was collected in donations from samurai, priests, townspeople, and farmers in Hikone domain. This list gives the names of all the contributors, making it an important record of the names and family composition of domain residents at the time.
