In Edo, when the shogun’s family took a newborn heir (wakagimi) on his first visit to a shrine (miya-mairi), it was customary for the party to stop for a rest at the Ii residence in the Sotosakurada district on their way back to Edo Castle. Soon after the birth in 1762 of Iemoto, heir of the tenth shogun Tokugawa Ieharu, a miya-mairi was planned and preparations begun for a visit to the Ii family. This set of two booklets provides details of the year-long preparations for the event and the activities and etiquette observed during the visit.
