The Battle of Sekigahara |
Six-panel folding screen, ink and color on paper; 19th century; Gift of the Ii Family |
This screen depicts the Battle of Sekigahara, which took place in Mino Province (present-day Gifu Prefecture) in 1600. Warriors from around the country, divided into eastern and western camps respectively led by Tokugawa Ieyasu and Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s general Ishida Mitsunari, are identified by their battle banners. The Ii warriors in their distinctive red armor (akazonae), fighting for the Tokugawa side, are seen clustered in the second panel from right, with Ii Naomasa in the lead. This work is a copy of the original screen by Kanō Baishun. The names of Ii family retainers were added and corrected on the screen when it was copied for the purpose, it is believed, of demonstrating their achievements.
