Samuraijū Yuishochō (Family Histories of Hikone Domain Retainers)

Samuraijū Yuishochō (Family Histories of Hikone Domain Retainers)
Two of a set of 80 booklets, ink on paper; late Edo and early Meiji periods, from Genroku 4 (1691) to Meiji 4 (1871); Important Cultural Property; Gift of the Ii Family

These registers include records about each samurai retainer of Hikone domain. They were compiled by the metsukeyaku, officials responsible for the management of domain personnel, based on résumés submitted by each retainer household. In 1691, fourth daimyo Ii Naooki (1656–1717) ordered his chief retainers to start compiling these registers. In addition to volumes for those of samurai rank (chigyōtori), there are compilations on low-ranking foot soldiers (kachi), noh actors, and doctors. The registers were maintained for almost 200 years until the abolition of the domain.
