Before the arrival of the Ii clan, Hikone had a castle at Sawayama, which belonged to Ishida Mitsunari, one of the leading vassals of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. This drawing shows the view of Sawayama in the mid-Edo period, annotated with information on old sites drawn from documents and oral transmissions of elders.
